As most of you will know, I did a little work a while back on the a new daily lifestyle & entertainment website from Declan Leavy and Danielle Farrell, both of whom I worked with at Social & Personal. The website has been a huge success for the guys and due to work commitments and developing Wintour&Guinness I haven't been able to do much contributing of late but hopefully with a new apartment sorted in the next few weeks and a better organised schedule I'll be able to get back to doing some stuff for them. The Daily Update is indeed updated daily and covers everything from the worlds of fashion, beauty, movies and music. Do make sure to check it out soon and the guys love to hear your comments so make sure to tell them what you are loving. The website can be found here and below is one of the articles I wrote for them about the next big things in the fashion industry.
Fashions New Power Players
Phoebe Philo: Look in your wardrobe and tell me this, have you got a pair of stacked timber heels? A shelf full of neutral coloured hippy dresses? High waisted pants? Several staple pieces in caramel hues? If yes than at some point your style has been influenced by British designer Phoebe Philo. Philo first made her mark as Stella McCartney's right hand women at Chloe and together the duo transformed what was a dusty old french label into one of the most hip fashion houses worldwide with its mix of traditional femininity and exquisite tailoring. After a few years away from the world of fashion, Philo is now head of Celine, where since 2008 she has turned out piece after piece of minimalist heaven - seeing the french house's sales soar far beyond expectations. We here at The Daily Update think Philo has the potential to become as big as Marc Jacobs and like fashion superstar Jacobs, who has created a brand based on what women actually want to wear, Celine is a neutral-coloured sea of mannish pants, structured coats and capes and delicious tote bags in vibrant colours and textures that women are snapping up. Like Jacobs, she has that knack for creating clothes that flatter women's bodies rather than work against them. Visit www.celine.com for more information on the brand and for a look at the current range visit Brown Thomas.
Nicola Formichetti: Formichetti is a name that doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and those not familiar with him will be oblivious to the huge influence he holds within the fashion world. If the likes of Rachel Zoe and company are the super-stylists of the world - then Formichetti is without a doubt a 'meta' stylist. Serving as both fashion director of Vogue's Homme Japan and Japanese high street brand Uniqlo - he is also finding the time to be the creative director of Thierry Mugler. Oh did we also mention that he is also Lady Gaga's personal stylist! He first met the singer two years ago and has since created some of the singers wildest looks. We're talking that meat dress, lobster headpieces and along with Gaga came up with the concept for her entrance to the Grammys this year where she arrived inside a Hussein Chalayan designed egg. Formichetti is one fashion player who pushes style way beyond its usual boundaries. Expect more controversial outfits soon.
Freja Beha Erichsen: A square face. A nose that is gumdrop. A body that is long, lithe, androgynous and covered in more than a dozen tattoo's, Freja Beha Erichsen is the the model of the moment. Like Kate Moss before her, Freja is one of few models who has managed to dominate the modelling industry despite a look that eschews all the traditional notions of what a supermodel should look like. Last year she walked in no less than forty catwalk shows for the autumn/winter collections, fronted various campaigns for high street brands like H&M to high end luxury brands such as Valentino and Georg Jensen and if that didn't cement her status as one of the biggest fashion models today, fashion house's Chloe and Alexander Wang named a bag and a shoe after her. Visit www.frejabeha.com for more information or follow her at twitter.com/JegFreja.
Lauren Santo Domingo: Seen the last few years as just another American socialite, Santo Domingo - who is married to Beer heir Andres Santo Domingo and who also works as a contributing editor to US Vogue - is more than just a pretty face who wears nice clothes. Just as Natalie Massenet revolutionised online fashion shopping with Net A Porter - Moda Operandi, Santo Domingo's Internet fashion business, which launched in February with business partners, Aslang Magnusdottir and former creative director of Liberty of London Yasmin Sewell, gives its invitation only members access to a virtual trunk show which puts the member exactly where the likes of Anna Wintour and the A-Lister's sit during the runway shows. Santo Domingo is one of the most watched women within the tough world of New York high society and her power within the fashion industry has seen her eclipse many an A-lister. In 2008, she was photographed wearing a Nina Ricci gown which was then worn several weeks later by Sarah Jessica Parker at the world premiere of the first Sex And The City movie. Blake Lively: Sarah Jessica Parker, Audrey Hepburn, Kirstin Dunst, Tilda Swinton and Scarlett Johansson. These are just some of the names one can think of that the fashion industry has embraced over the years. These women became mega-famous not just for their acting ability but also for their deep love of fashion and the fashion industry was quick to repay the love. You only have to look at the effect Audrey Hepburn had when she threw on a simple black dress from Givenchy or that Halston Heritage dress Sarah Jessica Parker wore at the beginning of the second Sex And The City movie which caused a worldwide trend and frenzy to snap it up. These days however, Blake Lively is the biggest star to dominate the world of fashion. At just 23 years of age, she has graced the cover of US Vogue three times and is now the face of Chanel's mademoiselle handbag range - a role that is usually reserved for French and occasionally European stars. As with the likes of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Freja Beha Erichsen and Victoria Beckham, Blake has seen her status as a style icon further set in stone thanks to Christian Louboutin, who named a shoe after her - the Blake. With the ratings for Gossip Girls fourth season fast decreasing, expect to see Blake become one of Hollywood's biggest stars thanks to recent films such as The Town and The Green Lantern. In fashion, the leaders of the pack and those in power is constantly evolving. Over the next twelve months, these are the names to watch out for. Its been a tough time these last few years, we've been through a devastating recession - crippling several brands and we've also had to say goodbye to two of fashions brightest stars Lee 'Alexander' McQueen and Isabella Blow. The world of fashion is ever evolving and those who lurk in the dark of the fashion world are faces waiting to be noticed. Here's the list of those whose star is going to be shining a little brighter soon.
