Melbourne Spring Fashion Week kicked off yesterday with the David Jones Spring Racing 2012 runway show. Being amongst all the action, my partner in crime Gillian and I took our comfy seats next to the runway to view all the latest trends to hit Australia’s most fashionable department store. Fashionably taking place next to the flagship Chanel store at City Square, racing legend Gai Waterhouse cooled her heels on the front row while her David Jones stable-mate, race wear ambassador Emma Freedman, introduced the collection with Miss Universe Australia 2010, Jesinta Campbell. Standout pieces included a printed Mary Katrantzou dress, a black Camilla And Marc dress with a hot pink frill neckline and my favourite being the Dion Lee orange dress which was matched with a Nerida Winter yellow headpiece. It took a while for the good stuff to come out to be honest. I sat there waiting to see some Victoria Beckham, Chloe or Givenchy to hit the runway in the form of either accessories or ready to wear but the organisers stuck to a somewhat Australian theme and the overall show suffered as high end accessories were left out in favour of cheap looking items from brands such as Mimco. One of Australia’s top fashion models Samantha Harris took the stage to open and close the show and believe me she is even more beautiful in real life than what I have seen in the pages of Harpers or Vogue. With it being the first day, there were a few hiccups which one couldn’t help but notice. Loose headpieces, dresses which were far too big for the models and loose shoes all made for a show that lacked coordination and thorough planning, but it was fun nonetheless and I look forward to the weeks festivities. The week is young………..
