Located within the former stables of the heritage listed Como House, I decided to take a trip this  to the recently opened The Stables Of Como which brings a country-in-the-city appeal to one of Melbourne’s most affluent inner city neighbourhoods, Toorak. Brought to you by the ICKE & IGBY management group, these guys are best known for creating Richmond’s much loved Friends of Mine, as well as Hawthorn favourite Porgie + Mr. Jones and Snow Pony in Deepdene.
Set at the rear of the heritage-listed Como House building, just beside the houses courtyard, the airy and light-filled structure pulls off a Hampton’s like vibe, with soft earthy tones, lots of modern floral references and white bruised timber furnishings bringing something completely different to the Melbourne coffee scene.

Guests can order picnic baskets in the summer, perfect for the upcoming warm weather and lay around the gardens or order a high tea which I‘m sure will go down a treat with Toorak’s finest. There’s also an impressively large range of old-fashioned, homemade cakes and biscuits – all beautifully piled up on display counter, salted caramel fudge, biscuits, cupcakes – they have the lot.

For the more savoury inclined, there are plenty of solid brunch classics, several of which have migrated from the menus of Friends and Porgie. Think, eggs done all ways, smashed avocado on thick slices of sourdough and the seasonal fruit with rosewater syrup which I ordered.

It doesn’t tick all the boxes for everyone, some may deem it a little pretentious, a little stuffy, however I loved it and felt it was a real treat. When the stress of the work week takes its toll, hop in your car, drive south of the city and you might be surprised just how relaxed you will be after a stroll through the gardens.
